Located 16 km (10 mi) west of mainland Costa Rica, the island was inhabited in pre-Columbian times, with evidence of a community here including mysterious, hand-carved stone spheres. Take a boat out into the surrounding marine environment to catch sights of breaching whales and dolphins. The coral reefs that surround the island have become known for their biodiversity; you can take a dive into the blue to see manta rays, sea turtles, and white-tipped reef sharks.
