The Chapel of Reconciliation stands on the site of the old Church of Reconciliation, on Bernauer Straße in the Mitte district of Berlin.
The church was completed in 1894 as an imposing brick-built building by the architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel, in the Gothic revival style. It received some damage in the Second World War, and still had a deactivated American bomb in the basement discovered during the reconstruction in 1999, but the church survived the war.
With the Division of Berlin in 1945, the church building found itself within the Soviet sector, with most of the parishioners in the neighbouring French sector. This meant that when the Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961, it ran directly in front of the church on its western side and behind it on the eastern side, preventing access to everyone except the border guards, who used its tower as an observation post.
The church building was destroyed in 1985 in order ‘to increase the security, order and cleanliness on the state border with West Berlin’ according to the official justification by the GDR (German Democratic Republic) government. Four years later in 1989, the Wall fell.
In the summer of 1990 the removal of the border fortifications began, leaving the land where the Church of Reconciliation had once stood overgrown with grass and shrubs. While the general trend was to get rid of the physical evidence of Berlin’s division, the Reconciliation Parish considered the most suitable use for the site, in a way that commemorated its past whilst looking towards the future. The result was to build a chapel on the site; a modern construction that considered ecological and historical concerns as well as the needs of its parishioners.

  • So many little details, and a cozy feeling, makes Chapel a worth while stop 😊 We had both alkohol and virgin drinks.  more »
  • There is few places that really know how to do a decent cocktail - the barkeepers at Chapel's surely belong to this selected group! The bar looks unpretentious from the outside - inside you will...  more »

  • I nearly rated it only 1 star but the staff was nice and the bar looks quiet ok. Here is why: The bar has the idea of putting great drinks on a black list. So, I was ordering a Moscow Mule and although it wasn't written on their "Wall of Shame", they told me how oh so different they are and that oh they tweak every cocktail and long drink. Oh well. So I asked for a Dark & Stormy. The Bar Tender /Waiter didn't even know what that was or has heard of it. It's a drink every good bar offers, literally. Alright, but he was super friendly and eager and said "no problem, I'll mix that up for you (after I told him the ingredients). What I had wasn't any close to dark, nor stormy. It was a glass full of Ginger Beer with potentially 1cl rum that hadn't added the flavor even. I told myself i won't give it back as it was already weird, me ordering black listed stuff or non of the menu's drinks. At the end, I paid 12 Euros (WAYYYY too overpriced) for that but I told the waiter. He seemed unimpressed. So maybe its best to stick with what they have on their menu? But the twisted whiskey sour of a friend was not promising neither. All in all, it's a No for me.
