The Müggelsee, also known as the Großer Müggelsee, is a lake in the eastern suburbs of Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It is the largest of the Berlin lakes by area, with an area of, a length of and a breadth of.
The lake is in the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick. The suburbs of Köpenick, Friedrichshagen, Rahnsdorf and a little section of Müggelheim border on the lake.
The lake itself is 8m deep at its deepest point. At its south end are hills called the 'Müggelberge', which are 115m high; they were formed during the Pleistocene (as a kettle hole, remaining at Weichselian glaciation). On the so-called 'Kleiner Müggelberg', the much-visited and popular 'Müggelturm' (a tower) was built, the first one in 1889 (destroyed in a fire in 1958), and the current one in 1960/61. The tower offers extensive views over the lake and the forests against the Berlin skyline.
The River Spree flows into the lake via the smaller Kleiner Müggelsee, which is only in area. The Friedrichshagen waterworks on the northern bank of the Müggelsee obtains most of its water from the lake. There are also numerous deep wells located near the banks, and are mainly fed by the bank filtrate and only to a small share by groundwater.

  • Incredible place to relax, so close to the big city but so different. We stopped our bike tour in a green valley and surrounded by ducks and other acquatic birds. Highly suggested for who needs a brea...  more »
  • There is no entrance fee, which is an advantage. There are some really nice areas of grass and trees where you can enjoy the summer. But the water is not very delicious or clean and several places there are several meters stone before being out in the "good" water. There a part of the beach which is nudist beach, we found out. So if you come to the FKK sign, you don't have to wear more

  • A very nice place to relax and chill. You can get there using S3. Then get out of the train at the Friedrichshagen station. From the station you can take tram and you will reach near to the entry of the lake. However, you can go one more station further to take bus. But, by taking bus you have to walk more to reach the main entry
  • A bigger lake easily reachable by bike or public transport from Berlin, great to get away from the city, recharge in nature and wander around the forest surrounding the lake. Tip: the smaller Teufelsee nearby is a more chilled area and the Müggelturm provides a good view of the area.
