Enter the realm of the world’s largest population of grizzled giant squirrels and mugger crocodiles at Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, a thorn scrub and sandalwood forest sheltering over 200 species of wild animals, including rare white bison, otherwise known as albino gaur. The mixed deciduous forests with high shola trees provide excellent trekking opportunities, with numerous observation decks allowing you to observe elephants, gaurs, spotted deer, and grey langurs. You can also take a jungle safari to explore the sanctuary in comfort. Stay in Vasiyappara ethnic huts, or even Koottar treetop houses near swamps to enjoy good views of the area. • Not particularly organised but the guided walk was interesting. We went up a watchtower from which we spotted a few birds then walked along a riverbank which apparently was frequented by elephants in the evenings. There was plenty of wildlife to enjoy including monkeys, several types of bird and a stag deer. We felt that the beautiful views in the drive up from Munnar coupled with the walk merited 5 stars for the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is worth visit for tracking. It has 2 km walk in forest on hills @ 225/- while 6 km walk towards water fall has approx 450/- per person. Tracking is with the supervision of Forest Guard. Its slightly Dangerous but worth visit. Water bottle is required. If you are lucky then you may see forest animals.
