Nijo Castle, Nakagyo

#4 of 1,412 in Things to do in Kyoto
Originally built in 1603 and holding World Heritage Site status, Nijo Castle presents an exemplary look at Japanese feudal architecture. The castle served as a residence to the first Edo shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the complex contains two concentric circles of moat and wall fortifications, surrounding the central palace and auxiliary buildings. Observe the sound you make as you walk through the corridors connecting various buildings on the "nightingale floors" designed to make noise and warn guards against intruders. Put Nijo Castle into our Kyoto road trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Great experience. The chef was very accommodating and invited us in though we didn't have a reservation. The lunch was a great experience and many courses and different types of foods to sample. The server was very attentive, and the chef would also step in and bring out the dishes. Amazing experience!
  • One of the best attractions in Kyoto! If you are interested in beautiful historic buildings of significant value or traditional art, buy the ticket for both the building and gardens. The shogun palace is much larger than expected and the floor chirps like a nightingale as you walk on it due to the wood type and way they nailed wood. The gardens themselves are gorgeous, especially in autumn when the trees turn bright red. Good value for money.
