The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji will appeal to history buffs. Get a sense of the local culture at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Sanjusangendo Temple. There's still lots to do: stop by Arashiyama, take in the spiritual surroundings of Ryoanji Temple, take an in-depth tour of Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design, and take a stroll through Gion.

Traveling by car from Kanazawa to Kyoto takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. October in Kyoto sees daily highs of °F and lows of °F at night. On the 11th (Mon), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can take a train to Osaka.

Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Popular historic sites such as Himeji Castle and Nishi no Maru are in your itinerary. For shopping fun, head to Dotombori District or Minami (Namba). Step out of Osaka to go to Himeji and see Koko-en, which is approximately 1h 45 min away. There's still lots to do: explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle, see the interesting displays at Namban Culture Center, wander the streets of Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Reien-ji Temple.

Take a train from Kyoto to Osaka in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around °F in October, and nighttime lows around °F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 14th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel to Tokyo.
