Often referred to as Iceland's second city, Akureyri offers an array of cultural attractions in a scenic setting.
Take a break from Akureyri with a short trip to Grjotagja Cave in Reykjahlid, about 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: take in the dramatic scenery at Goðafoss Waterfall, admire the natural beauty at Arctic Botanical Gardens (Lystigardurinn), take in the architecture and atmosphere at Saurbaejarkirkja, and witness a stunning natural landmark at Mývatn Nature Baths.

Reykjavik to Akureyri is an approximately 3-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. In August in Akureyri, expect temperatures between 16°C during the day and 8°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Egilsstadir.

Traveling by car from Akureyri to Egilsstadir takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or do a combination of flight and bus. In September, plan for daily highs up to 13°C, and evening lows to 5°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Tue) to allow enough time to fly to Selfoss.

Selfoss

Sitting on the banks of the picturesque Olfusa River, the laid-back town of Selfoss provides a good location to relax and enjoy some of the country's natural delights.
Get out of town with these interesting Selfoss side-trips: Strokkur (in Geysir), Faxi (Vatnsleysufoss) Waterfall (in Skalholt) and Blaskogabyggd (Haukadalur & Gullfoss Falls). There's lots more to do: explore the striking landscape of Thingvellir National Park, admire the sheer force of Bruarfoss Waterfall, take in the spiritual surroundings of Selfosskirkja, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Black Sand Beach.
