Chinatown, New York City

Bordering the Lower East Side and Little Italy, Chinatown has the largest diaspora of Chinese people in the country. Chinatown Manhattan is one of six Chinatowns in New York City, but its location within the downtown area makes it the most popular. Along the pedestrian walkways, tightly packed storefronts are bursting with colorful wares, from souvenirs to traditional Chinese food. Outside the pedestrian thoroughfares in Chatham Square, you'll find two memorials: one commemorating the Chinese soldiers who fought and died in World War II and the other a statue of Lin Zexu, or Commissioner Lin, who opposed the opium trade. Consider paying a visit to the Museum of Chinese in America to learn more about the Chinese-American experience, and be sure to check out the top of any New York City pay phones that might be left in the neighborhood. In the 1970s the phone booths were capped with pagoda tops. Put Chinatown at the forefront of your travel plans using our New York City trip planning site.
