Regarded as a haven for creative types from the late 19th century till the late 20th century, Greenwich Village served as the birthplace for the Beat generation and 1960s counterculture in the East Coast. Though a victim of gentrification, the Village--as it's known by locals--still possesses a strong community identity. The best way to get a feel for this is to stroll through the area. Make sure to stop by the historic Washington Square Park and the nearby Grey Art Gallery, which houses New York University's art collection. The neighborhood also boasts a strong performing arts scene with many theaters. To learn more about the area's important history and architecture, take a guided tour.
