A French-style mansion, The Elms represents the former summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind. The construction of the house cost approximately $1.5 million when finished in 1901. Berwind, who made his money in the coal industry, hired architect Horace Trumbauer to design the summer home in the same style as Chateau Asnieres in Asnieres-sur-Seine, near Paris. The cost of admission includes an audio tour that guides you through the house with details of day-to-day life. Opt for the "Servant Life Tour" for a picture of the servants' responsibilities; a knowledgeable guide will delve deep into the lives of the team who worked to run the household. What an enchanting place! So much history and beauty in one place. All the shade trees were a perfect reprieve from the hot summer weather and once you go inside you can almost envision yourself in the Gilded Age. I sew period costumes and if I lived in Newport this would be the perfect location for a photoshoot to showcase my handiwork for my portfolio. If you love antiques and history and beautiful things do not skip The Elms.
WOW!!! Understated guilded age beauty, well worth the admission. They supply head sets for tour with optional extra content for the more historically curious. Lots of walking & stairs, so wear comfy shoes. Staff is handy if there are extra questions, but the tour is very thorough. Behind the scenes servant tour also offered, but I didn't go on it (time & my feet hurt). Amazing the difference in how people lived.
