Admire archaic Islamic architecture at Friday Mosque (Juma Mosque), a cathedral mosque and part of the World Heritage-protected walled inner town of Khiva. This 18th-century single-hall mosque features a flat roof supported by over 200 carved wooden pillars--a few of which date back to the original 10th-century building and bear ancient Arabic inscriptions in Kufic. Floral-vegetable patterns adorn some of the newer 18th-century columns, complemented by lavish decoration and delicate door carvings. With its 52 m (171 ft) baked-brick minaret intermittently rounded by turquoise tile belts, the mosque remains a landmark of the old city. • Very atmospheric mosque. See if you can tell which pillars are old and which are new. Also interesting is to see that some pillars have wool as a sort of buffer. Access to the minaret seems to be currently closed.
  • Well worth to go inside and get the feel for all the history attached to it
