Create an itinerary including Glacier Lagoon
At Glacier Lagoon chunks of blue icebergs float along the shore so close that you can almost reach out and touch them. This glacial lake at the head of Breidamerkurjokull glacier developed as the glacier began to drift away from the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the tongue of the lake, where icebergs break away from the glacier and drift from the lake into the ocean. Keep your eyes peeled for seals, fish, and sea birds, such as arctic tern, who make their home in the lagoon. Walk the length of the lagoon's shore to the black beach, where you'll find icebergs washed ashore. Several tour companies operate boat tours on the lagoon. • The size of these icebergs when you know that you are probably seeing only 1/4 above the surface of the water with an iceberg the size of a naval frigate in the foreground and a loaded container ship....  more

  • A stunning lagoon where icebergs are born. There are large one just sat in the lagoon and small one just float past. The sun was shining so we just sat watching. Saw plenty of birds and some seals...

  • Amazing! I wouldn’t spend more than an hour or two here, it isn’t worth coming from Reykjavik by itself. But it is an excellent stop on any ring road tour.
  • Breathtakingly beautiful, heart wrenching, and finally scary to actually see how much glacier melt had already occurred in just the last few years alone. Free stop with amazing photo opportunities. A must see, but be prepared for the sad, harsh impacts that Iceland is already experiencing due to climate change.
