Explore at least a few of the 2,000 lavishly decorated rooms of the historic Royal Palace of Madrid, considered one of the finest buildings in the city. Take the grand stairway to discover the state rooms, noted for their detailed tapestries, frescoes, porcelain, carvings, china, and silverware. The courtyard connects to both the old pharmacy, which holds hundreds of bottles of centuries-old medicines, and the royal armory, a two-level exhibit of medieval weapons and armor. Although the enormous palace is the official residence of the King, the royal family doesn’t actually live here; the site is generally used for state ceremonies. Avoid visiting on Wednesdays, when entry is free and the lines are extremely long. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Madrid holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Royal Palace of Madrid and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

We booked on line and preordered the audio guide. Despite joining the 'prebooked ticket' queue we still had to wait half hour to gain entry. It seemed like the 'no ticket queue' moved faster...

Great Palace to visit! Highly recommended to but advance tickets, kitchen tickets were sold out a couple days in advance so we didn't get to see them. Was able to get same day tickets for Palace but had to wait until mid-afternoon. Good amount of rooms to visit, several very unique decor, all in beautiful condition. Good flow. Not overly crowded. Recommended!

This was my first time visiting Madrid, the Royal Palace is a MUST SEE attraction if you are in town. The architecture and scale of building is stunning. Make sure to have a tour of the kitchen (you pay extra) but it’s very informative and it’s a piece of history. To the right as you enter the main patio there is armory that seem to be hidden, inside you will find full armors on display! A nice little surprise. Strongly recommend!
