Akureyri — 4 nights

Often referred to as Iceland's second city, Akureyri offers an array of cultural attractions in a scenic setting.Change things up with a short trip to Grjotagja Cave in Reykjahlid (about 1h 10 min away). There's still lots to do: admire the sheer force of Goðafoss Waterfall, tour the pleasant surroundings at Krafla Lava Fields, steep yourself in history at Saurbaejarkirkja, and get some thrills on the water with a speed boat tour.

Reykjavik to Akureyri is an approximately 3-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. In July in Akureyri, expect temperatures between 16°C during the day and 9°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Fri) to allow time to drive to Egilsstadir.

Sitting on the banks of the picturesque Olfusa River, the laid-back town of Selfoss provides a good location to relax and enjoy some of the country's natural delights.Change things up with these side-trips from Selfoss: Faxi (Vatnsleysufoss) Waterfall (in Skalholt), Blaskogabyggd (Haukadalur & Gullfoss Falls) and Strokkur (in Geysir). There's still lots to do: take in the dramatic scenery at Skogafoss, get curious at Ljosafoss Power Station, contemplate the waterfront views at Kerið, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Selfosskirkja.
